Here are ten steps to help you think through a photovoice workshop design:
Introduction and Trust Building — Participants meet one another, share their stories, and begin building a safe and collaborative community space.
Project Objectives and Photography Ethics — The workshop introduces the goals of the project while discussing consent, representation, privacy, and ethical image-making practices.
Exploring Cameras and Photography Training — Participants learn basic photography skills and explore how images can be used as tools for storytelling and self-expression.
First Photo Selection and Caption Session — Participants select their first photographs and begin writing captions that connect the images to their lived experiences.
Second Photo Selection and Caption Session — Participants continue reflecting on their photographs while identifying emotions, memories, and recurring themes within their stories.
Third Photo Selection and Caption Session — Participants refine their image selections and engage in deeper group discussions about community experiences and shared realities.
Debriefing the Experience — The group reflects on the emotional, personal, and collective impact of participating in the photovoice process.
Actualizing the Experience — Participants explore how their photographs and narratives can contribute to advocacy, education, healing, or social change.
Planning the Exhibit Gallery — The group collaboratively designs how the photographs, captions, and stories will be displayed and shared with the public.
Attending the Exhibit Event — The workshop concludes with a public exhibition where participants present their visual narratives and engage the community through dialogue and storytelling.
